Keeping a day holy and going to church are not at all the same thing. When it comes to being holy, which would include thought, word, motive, attitude, and actions, there are probably quite a few unholy people sitting in church, no matter what day of the week it is. The Seventh Day Adventists and other groups who are proponents of the Sabbath have always associated keeping a holy day of rest with attending church. Not only that, what is done the rest of that day? Are people engaging in what others might view as unholy when they are not in church? Simply going to church does not make ANY day holy. It would be considered unholy to hold on to grudges and have a lack of forgiveness toward someone, yet how much of that exists in our churches? There are many stories of how people have been hurt by things that have gone on in churches or by something that someone said to another person. Everything said here also applies, of course, to those who worship on Sunday.
Having a day set aside as holy would include not doing anything that would even appear as being unholy. I read in a book by a Jewish rabbi that there were 39 prohibitions for the Sabbath, many of which were passed down ORALLY by Moses. Assuming that was the case, it is impossible for ANYONE today to keep it holy.
What WOULD be required today to keep a sabbath day holy? Each person has to answer that question in his or her heart. It requires, though, a good and thorough knowledge of Scripture. What does the Bible say about what one should or should not do, to be considered holy, and not just on the sabbath, but each and every day? The Bible has a lot to say about the subject of holiness, but how many Christians could make a list of all of the things it mentions? To be holy means to be obedient to what scripture teaches about living holy lives. That does not apply to just one day of the week.
It is important to set aside one day out of every week for rest, relaxation, and corporate worship, but that does not determine whether or not it is holy. Does that leave a person off the hook for keeping the other six days holy as well? While it is true that going to church is a holy activity, what is really in a person's heart and attitude? When the fourth commandment says, "Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy," it was meant to be a day of rest from labors and set aside to honor God. While church attendance is a part of that, it is not the determining factor. Just because one goes to church on Saturday or Sunday does not make that day any more holy than any other day. So, let's make sure that we all draw a distinction between going to church and living holy lives. They are not the same thing. I can have a day of rest and honor God just as much by sitting at home as well as attending church. That does not mean, of course, that I should not go to church. It simply means that going to church is not a requirement.
