Genesis is under attack today. People are questioning whether this first book of the Bible can be taken literally, Some are calling it poetry. There is a refusal by many to even consider it as a book that can be of use for us today. I am going to show how practical Genesis is. It has many life applications. Here are a few from chapters three and four.

Adam and Eve "heard the sound of the Lord walking in the Garden...and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God..." (3:8) This teaches that God created men and women with a CONSCIENCE.

After eating of the forbidden fruit and being confronted by God, Adam said "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate." Then when God questioned Eve she said, 'The serpent deceived me, and I ate." (3:12-13) Here we see a case of neither person TAKING RESPONSIBILITY for his or her actions, but instead CASTING BLAME AND MAKING EXCUSES.

In chapter four anger and domestic violence make their first appearance in recorded history. "So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground. And Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of the flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering; but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell." (4:3-5) This story records ANGER CAUSED BY JEALOUSY BETWEEN TWO BROTHERS.

Next, we see anger leading to murder. The Lord said to Cain, "...sin is crouching at the door, and its desire is for you, but you must master it." But because Cain DID NOT MASTER HIS ANGER, he "rose up against Abel his brother and killed him." (4:7-8)

If society lived by nothing else than the life principles taught in Genesis 3 and 4, how much better would it be! In review, here is what Genesis 3-4 teaches:

1. Follow your conscience.
2. Take personal responsibility for your actions. Do not cast blame or make excuses for your behavior.
3. People must identify what causes anger in their lives and deal with it before it gets the best of them and leads to violence.
4, Anger can eventually lead to murder.

Isn't this exactly what we see happening today? If these four life applications were followed we would see much positive change in our culture. Who says that Genesis has no value or practical relevance for us today? Those who refuse to believe the truth of scripture or are totally ignorant of what this book teaches. That's who!
