Believers are in a good position to understand the importance of not losing their heads when humans all around them are running around screaming in a headless masquerade. One of the things Jesus said, with his usual prescient clarity, is that we are not to be troubled, meaning that the current events must not penetrate our calm deliberations and cause us to have unnecessary sleepless nights and distressing days.
It is because Jesus knew days, such as we are presently having, will inflict the world with mounting pain and trepidation that he said, “But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.” (Mark 13:23)
Bible students will realise that the above quotation is taken from a discourse Jesus had when he explained to the disciples the events that were coming towards the last days on earth, as well as the last days of Rabbinic Judaism (the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in AD70).
People usually have short memories, and those who should know better are usually the ones who suffer the worst from such shortcomings. For three and one half years Jesus taught his disciples about things to come, especially things related to his death and resurrection. And yet his death and resurrection hit them as if he had never spoken to them, had never prepared them, and they were utterly at a loss and found wanting.
The disciples should have been well prepared for whatever came, their eyes and understanding should have been finely tuned because Jesus told them, “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” (Luke 21:28).
What Jesus said to the disciples apply equally to us since we are still in the eschatological period known as the last days, or the age of grace; the last age before the Millenium. We are looking up, not in a head-scratching, airy-fairy, aahhh I am not too sure about this kind of manner, but with glad assurance and great confidence that prophecy is unfolding right before our eyes.
It is time to wake up to reality and appreciate that the things forecast in the scriptures are becoming real, and we are experiencing the very things our generation is supposed to be experiencing.
Some people say that a world war is on the horizon, and they may well be correct. The possibility is real, especially from a historical point of view.
History has taught us that world wars start because of a miscalculation. As strange as it may seem a horrific miscalculation is not always inadvertent.
World War 1 began after the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian empire and his wife Sophia were assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 by a Bosnian Serb name Gavrilo Princip. Princip was one of a group of six sent to kill the Archduke because they thought that by killing him, they were striking a blow for the independence of their beloved Serbia.
The consequences of killing this one man led to World War 1.
Following an ultimatum that ran out, Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Germany supported Austro-Hungary during the war while Russia supported her ally Serbia. Germany promptly declared war on Russia on August 1, and on France on August 3, 1914. On August 4, 1914, German troops invaded Belgium, flouting the neutrality that Belgium was promised. Great Britain declared war on Germany that same day and so World War 1 became a full blown war.
World War 2 also commenced by a huge miscalculation.
Scholars have stated and argued for a plethora of reasons that led up to World War 2, but the plain truth is that World War 2 was triggered because of Germany’s miscalculation.
Here is how Wikipedia puts it in their article (accessed 2 Sept 2014) on Causes of World War II:
“...to deter Hitler, Britain and France announced that an invasion [of Poland] meant war... Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 and rejected the British and French demands that it withdraw resulting in their declaration of war on September 3, 1939 in accordance with the defence treaties they signed with Poland and publicly announced.”
And so World War 2, just like World War 1, became a full blown war.
Note if you will; World War 1, created in Europe.
Note the replay if you will; World War 2, created in Europe.
And now the war drums in Europe are beating once more.
It’s a mighty dangerous game and somewhere along the line another miscalculation can, and some will argue shall, occur and plunge the world into World War 3.
The same players that created World War 1 and 2 are now bellicose and prime movers in what may be shaping up to become World War 3.
Should believers be unduly concerned? No.
When nations turn their backs on God, they inevitably and wilfully turn their faces and affection in the direction of Satan, and the Bible makes it clear, “Evil shall slay the wicked” (Psalm 34:21). There is a preponderance of evil everywhere, alas it has even entered the church and infected some of its members, and once God has unleashed the demonic forces then carnage will result.
Demonic forces are currently being held in check by God’s grace and ineffable mercies until such time as He sees fit to do otherwise. At some point the end-times will commence, and we may be experiencing just such an event at the moment.
So what should Christians expect and what should we do?
We should expect things to get worse.
Everywhere in scripture the end-times have a progression, ending in total devastation. I do not know if nuclear war is inevitable as some think, but the world being devastated by man is a given. Every attempt the world had to get rid of nuclear weapons has been rejected because world leaders, many of no great stature, but knowing that these weapons confer on them a pyrrhic victory power, cling to them as a status symbol.
Paul tells us a little bit of this evil progression, and we should take note of what he says, “But evil men and seducers shall wax WORSE AND WORSE, deceiving, and being deceived.” (2 Timothy 3:13).
Mark my word, it is just simply a question of time before the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender) community and their ungodly liberal allies and Satan-worshipping co-horts, campaign to besmirch and outlaw marriage, pour scorn on fidelity, deem all children fair sexual targets, agitate for their right to have relations with animals, and do anything and everything that catch their fancy; all in accordance with Satan’s agenda.
Christians should keep looking up, looking towards heaven; for there is our salvation and the answers to our every problem.
The Bible says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” (Isaiah 26:3). We need to look up and keep trusting God.
The Scripture tells us, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2). Trusting in man-made solutions are not wise, God is the one in whom we can be confident.
The Word of God declares, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10). In God’s strong tower the righteous need not fear for within its walls are absolute safety.
Yes, believers need to keep looking up, otherwise they can lose their focus and their vision become diluted and their yearning for God’s kingdom become a distant dream.
By looking up we remain grounded and unmoved regardless of circumstances, just as God intended, “Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea” (Psalm 46:2). It is blessed to be a believer and have the assurance that with our God, regardless of the situation, all is well.
Enough said.
