A Child is Born!
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…”
John 1:14
On December 16, 2010, my second grandson, Isaiah James, was born. With Christmas scant days away, we were blessed to have in our midst a living reminder of Jesus when he was (incredibly!) as tiny and helpless as our Isaiah.
Isaiah even seemed to act the part. Quieter than any infant I’ve ever known, his extraordinary peace seemed to embrace the entire household. Joy permeated every conversation and activity as family life became filled with newness and excitement.
It is an awesome responsibility and privilege to care for a new life. Those of us without maternal instincts had to quickly relearn the art of feeding, changing diapers and tending delicate skin - fairly challenging tasks even with our modern conveniences. How much more difficult must it have been when Jesus was born? There was no CVS around the corner or a pediatrician within a few minutes’ drive. No sensors constantly monitored the baby, sounding an alarm at the slightest indication of distress. No dressers stood nearby filled with every conceivable article of infant clothing, nor a cabinet full of lotions, grooming items and pacifiers.
Life, especially for newborns, was certainly fragile in ancient Israel. The infant mortality rate may have been as high as 40%. One might conclude God took an extraordinary gamble by placing the eternal fate of the entire human race in a frail, helpless child at a time and place of dismally low life expectancy. But Jesus was God’s bold and sure answer to the plight of sin-sick humanity, a sovereign miracle of Grace planned before the beginning of time. Nothing on earth or in heaven could thwart the completion of the Creator’s perfect plan!
Oh, the joy God must have felt while gazing at the gentle, sinless babe, His only Son, born for the salvation of the World!
Heavenly Father, how awesome is your Gift! You have rescued your people for all time in one stunning act of Grace and Mercy through a frail and vulnerable babe. May we offer praise, honor and glory to you for all eternity! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
