Devotionals
"...you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets not to prophesy" (Amos 2:12).
What in the world does a seemingly obscure verse from the pen of a seemingly-obscure Old Testament prophet have to do with us today? EVERYTHING!
In ancient Israel, a Nazirite was one who took a vow of separation to God (Numbers 6:2). A prophet was one who communicated God's heart to the people. If you have committed your life to Jesus Christ, you are a modern-day Nazirite and prophet. You have been set apart for God's purposes--and to communicate His heart to your friends, family, co-workers, and beyond.
We live in a society that ridicules wholehearted devotion to God, and demands we keep quiet about our faith (under the guise of "tolerance"). And guess what? Most of us who claim to be Jesus-followers have bought into that system, and are more devoted to its seductions and intimidations than we are to the LORD. We're more intimately aware of the latest celebrity scandal, the latest sports news, or whatever our fleshly lusts drive us to than we are of what God wants to communicate to and through us. We place high value man's opinion. We have almost no value for the words of God. We've become system-followers, and have abandoned Jesus.
Are you sick and tired of buying into the worthless system? Then cry out to God. Cry out to Him to deliver you from that which holds you captive. Cry out to Him to draw you close to Him so that you don't care anymore what people think of you. I guarantee you that if you do that, you'll lose the respect of some--while gaining eternal influence in the lives of others.
