Just like today, the psalms that best exemplify praise and worship to God are hymns. Hymns are songs of praise to God, or are songs of praise and joy. Then, as today, hymns focused on praising God for everything He has done, is doing, and will do for every generation. The content of a hymn is pure praise to God and nothing else, worshipping Him as our Creator, life-giver, and supplier of everything we need. In hymns, we praise the majesty of God; we give Him first place in our lives; we thank Him for His deeds in our lives and the world at large; we thank Him for creation and everything in it; we thank Him for Christ and His Holy Spirit who live in us and reign in our lives.
Psalms 136 and 150 are great examples of praise and worship to God, both individually and corporately. But I like Psalm 139 the most because it was the one I spoke the most when I was going in and out of hospitals for depression until they finally diagnosed me as B-polar II and got me on the right medication. This psalm always reminded me that God was with me no matter where I was or what I was going through. The Holy Spirit used this psalm to help me know for certain that I could trust God in my time of great need. To read that I couldn’t go anywhere in the universe that He didn’t know where I was became a great comfort to me in those nights when I didn’t know what was going to happen the next day. The lines in verse 5, “You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me,” helped me not to worry about the future because He had it firmly in His hands. I could go on and on with each line and show just how much God has shown me in the psalm. To me, the greatest praise and worship that I can give God is the gift of letting Him have the live He saved in me for all of His purposes. For because of Him, as verse 14 says, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
