Highway to Heaven by J. C. Corcoran
Mt. 7:14 Isa.35:8ff
4/1/2014
The road from my house to the main road to town is narrow; only one vehicle at a time can be on it. If you’re going up and someone else is coming down, one of you must move to the side.
It’s old, old, old concrete (I think) filled with bumps, loose stones and holes, which are difficult to avoid, and if you drive too fast (over 10 mph) you will get bounced all over the place; not to mention what it will do to your vehicle.
You must hold tight onto the steering wheel and keep your eyes on the road. If you keep your eyes on the road and a tight grip on the wheel, and go slow, it can be a fairly smooth ride. Then once you get to the highway, you’re home free.
The prophet, Isaiah, talks about a highway in the 35th chapter, starting at verse 8. I hope you all follow along with me in your Bibles so you will know that I’m not kidding when I say that the Highway to Heaven is not just an old TV show; because right here, in these verses, Isaiah is describing the Highway to Heaven. He says: “And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools will not go about on it; No lion will be there, nor will any ferocious beast get up on it; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, and the ransomed of the Lord will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.”
And, as I said earlier, you’re home free.
Jesus says in Matthew 7:14: “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few will find it.” In fact, Isaiah says “that only the redeemed will walk there.”
The narrow road can be a scary road because, just like the road that leads from my house, it is full of bumps and holes. There is no other way for me to drive from my house to the highway without breaking the law and driving across someone else’s property. And we also cannot leave the narrow road that Jesus is talking about without breaking some of God’s laws; and that too will just get us in trouble.
No, we must follow the narrow road with all its bumps and holes. But we have Jesus for our steering wheel, and the minute we let go of Him we will get into trouble. As long as we hold onto Him, we will get over them and though them. Isaiah says “it will be for those who walk in that Way.” And Jesus says He is the Way in John 14:6
On the Highway to Heaven, Isaiah says “there will be neither lion nor any ferocious beast.”
In those days anyone travelling along the roads had to be alert for lions and other beasts; just like we have to be alert for the bumps in our narrow road.
But unlike the lonely traveler, who had to face the lion on their own, we have help from our Father all along the narrow road. He gave us a roadmap that will take us over and through the obstacles that seem to want to block our path. Of course I’m speaking of the Bible, which I hope you have in front of you right now. I hope you’re following my advice from an earlier message to always follow along in your Bible so you know that the person speaking is speaking the truth.
Reading the word of God is extremely important because it reveals God; He “revealed Himself to Samuel through His word.” (1 Sam. 3:21).
Jesus is called the living Word (The Word became flesh – John 1:14) and the only way we can learn that is by reading the word. He says “follow Me” and the only way you can do that is by reading the word. As you read and study the word, Jesus, through His Holy Spirit, which is in you, will guide you over the bumps and through the holes along the narrow road. And when He returns, according to 1 Thess. 4:16-17; “For the Lord himself will come down from Heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air…”
Where Paul refers to “the dead in Christ” I believe is the same as Isaiah saying in 36:10 “the ransomed of the Lord will return.” And they will meet us, those of us who are still alive when Christ returns, in the air.
And I believe that is where Christ Jesus will take us along the Highway to Heaven. And “gladness and joy will overtake them …”
