Devotionals
One of the most pithy statements in all of Scripture is found in Luke 5:5. "...Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at your word I will let down the net."
Jesus provided us with not only a great fishing story but also a word of encouragement for when it seems like we are laboring in vain. All our vain efforts can suddenly see different results when Jesus drops by. When Jesus gives the word, in His own timing, and we mix this with faith and obedience, everything can change almost overnight.
It is no longer our works that are bringing results. God's hand has already been working behind the scenes, preparing things, and causing all things to come together. Too often, we move forward in our own wisdom, trying to figure things out and trying to make sense of some situation. Proverbs 3:5-6 says that we are not to rely upon our own wisdom and understanding, but to acknowledge God in all of our ways, and then He will direct our paths. We need to learn to replace our own understanding with God's timing and direction. This truth has really come alive recently in my own life.
The exact thing that we have been laboring for a long time to see happen, with no results, we must be willingly to out of faith and obedience to do again, when Jesus gives the word to do it His way. This time we will see the kind of results expressed in the next verse. "And when they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking."
How many times do you and I, however, say, "But Lord, I am not going to do this again. I have already wasted all kinds of time with no results." Is there something in your life and my life that we have been laboring for a long time to accomplish in our own wisdom and understanding? I know there has been in my life, and I recently made a decision to just let it go, wait upon God, and if he wants it to happen, it will, in his way and in his timing, provided I am obedient when He speaks the word.
