“But the fruit of the Sprit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
-Galatians 5:22
I recently read a book by Linda Dillow in which she pointed out that God works through all the joys and trials in our lives to develop in us the fruits of the spirit. These fruits do not just ripen in us over night when we become Christians, but God uses our circumstances and leads us by the Holy Spirit to develop them.
As a 3rd grade teacher I would pray for patience every day before the kids arrived. On some days I would find myself reminding God that he forgot to give me my dose of patience that day. After two years of teaching 3rd grade and a trying period of waiting for God to bless us with a healthy pregnancy, my real lesson in patience began. In my fifth month of pregnancy I developed severe hypertension and had to be put on bed rest for the remainder of the summer until September when my baby could safely arrive. Let’s talk about a test of patience! All of my summer plans were cancelled and I couldn’t even start the school year with my students in August. All I could do is lie on the couch and wait “patiently” for September to roll around. As a very active and anxious person I did not have the strength or patience to do this on my own so I sought strength from God. I had my nose buried in my Bible as the Lord renewed me day by day for the remainder of my pregnancy. At the time, bed rest was not fun and was definitely one of the most trying times in my life, but looking back I can see how God used that situation to transform me into a more patient person. And we all know patience is a must-have in motherhood!
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for all the work you’ve done and are doing in and through me. You are so good and faithful, Lord. Thank you for the fruits of the Spirit you are developing within me, and Father I pray that you would continue to develop love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in my character. Help me to see how you are using everything I go through today, all the trials and joys, to make me into the woman you want me to be. Lord, I love you so much. In Jesus’ Holy Name I pray, Amen.
