Not Much to Look At?
He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
Isaiah 53:2 (NIV)
Interesting verse, wouldn’t you say? The prophet Isaiah was talking about Jesus. Isaiah said Jesus, wouldn’t be much to look at, in appearance. Isaiah said, nothing about Jesus appearance would draw us to Him. According to Isaiah Jesus would have no beauty or majesty in His appearance. It sounds like Isaiah was telling us Jesus; the Messiah would come looking like any ordinary man that most people just ignore.
Well Jesus the Messiah did come looking like an ordinary baby and even came from a place not well thought of. Nathaniel asked Phillip in John 1:46 (NIV): “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” It seems God created the ordinary to become the extraordinary. It didn’t matter what Jesus looked like or where He came from Jesus would become Savior of the world. Although, He may not have looked attractive or majestic, He became the most attractive and majestic man or woman to have walked this earth.
Even in Jesus time and even given His appearance, Jesus became the most sought after person for all kinds of things. Nicodemus climbed a tree just to get a glance at Jesus. Three men dug a hole through a roof, to put their friend in front of Jesus for healing. A woman washed the feet of Jesus with her perfume, tears and her hair. A General sought out Jesus to save his son. Another woman crawled just to touch the hem of his garment. These stories go on throughout the Bible.
I would venture to say that Christians look forward to the day they can look at Jesus face to face. Jesus whose appearance was neither majestic nor beautiful will be the most majestic and beautiful person we have ever seen, one day. God can take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Jesus, Not much to look at? I can’t wait to see Him in all his splendor, beauty and majesty.
God Bless
