The Lord’s Prayer Part Three
In Part Two of our series we dug a bit deeper in the matter of how and where to pray. Today we will learn at the Master’s knee about God’s abundant provision and that we needn’t beg God for our daily needs.
Matthew 6:7-8
7-13 “The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. (The Message)
Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:4, “For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.” (NLT)
In the present day, the doctrine of prosperity is widespread. People don’t want to hear about sin and asking for forgiveness; they want to hear about the blessings of God only. Those seeking to profit from God’s word, rather than speak the truth, are eager to provide what the people want in order to further their own agenda, be it monetary gain or fame. “They are full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God.”
In this passage, Jesus goes on to say God “knows better than you what you need.” God is not a genie in a bottle, ready to fulfill your every desire. God is your Heavenly Father and His interest is in supplying your needs and equipping you for the ministry of furthering the gospel, all the while growing and shaping you into the image of Jesus.
So let us be about the business of the Kingdom of God and trust God to supply all of our needs. Prayer is not a formula and you need not come with lofty words. God is not impressed with our vocabulary; in fact, some of the most powerful prayers that you will ever pray will have no words at all.
Lord, help me to bear my heart and soul to You in our time together. Lord, if I have been in sin, convict me so that I can be changed for the good of Your Kingdom. Make me like Jesus. Bestow upon me what You desire for Your purposes. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Next time we will explore the simplicity of prayers that move God’s heart, no dictionary or thesaurus needed!
