Working Through Issues
(Vox Domini)

by
Stephen A. Peterson
Having counseled many teenagers and young adults, I have come to learn that the majority of people struggle with several aspects of our life. My greatest concern is certainty. I am concerned about providing sufficient clothing, food and shelter for my family. Having sufficient funds to pay for the basic necessities of life is also a concern—utility bills, being able to pay for family health care, and so forth. I am concerned about being prepared for any natural or human caused disasters. This has caused me to work many extra hours to ensure that if I am not here or able to care for my wife, children or extended family that funds will be there on their behalf. When discussed with family or non-family persons, they believe my concerns are without merit.
Concern for family well-being has resulted in personal management. This is, making certain that everything is in order. Most aspects of my personal life begins with: “What if…?” then followed by self-analysis. “What if I should lose my position…? What if a tornado should destroy the house…? What if I should be incapacitated for a year or two…”
Some of my colleagues have given me their analysis as to why I have these issues. In every instance, it is that I am the oldest of 17 children. That I had to go to work to support my parents and siblings and to pay my way through high school and college until I went into military service. They are probably right. All that I know is that I have been this way for as long as I can remember.
At times, many times, during my daily visits with the Lord, I pray: “I’m sorry, Lord, for my dysfunctional behavior. Lord, if it is Your will, would You free me from me? You have taken care of me and my concerns for all of these years and still I have the same concerns and issues! What gives?” When I finish my prayer and relax a little, I sense the Lord is laughing at me and joking with my guardian angel. I can hear Him say:
“Hey, Pete! Relax man! You don’t have to be concerned about what you will eat, wear or where you will work. Remember, I take care of the birds of the air, the fish in the oceans and seas and the beasts walking freely on planet earth. Pete, you have a life to finish out. I’ve sent you dozens of teens and adults to lead to Me. You’ve done a fair job but you can do better. You can and will do better if you let me do My job in your life. I’m offering you complete and total freedom if you wish it so.”
When I elect to concede to Jesus and let Him guide and direct me, my concerns diminish. Every time without question. However, as everyone knows, sin weakens resolve and trust in God. Through a sinner, the light of Christ guides me back every time. ..And He forgives for my lack of trust in Him every time as well.
