One of my favorite healthy energy foods is dark chocolate in the form of powerberries which I purchase at Trader Joes. These are real fruit juice pieces made with acai, pomegranite, cranberry and blueberries all dipped in smooth dark chocolate. They are an excellent source of vitamin c, and anti-oxidants and flavinols which increase blood flow to the brain and to the heart. I keep these in the refrigerator to keep them cool and to prevent them from melting especially important in the summer. Dark chocolate, according to Dr. Joel Wallach, has theobromine which helps increase both energy and weight loss along with enhancing your mood, i. e. curbing depression.
Add to the dark chocolate raw organic walnuts. I love eating these walnuts with Powerberries because they make a good combination along with green tea as a chaser. I drink green tea not because it's the best tasting tea but because it's so healthy for you. It is more like a medicine so I drink it not for the flavor as much as it's many health benefits. Actually any herbal tea can be used but I'm concentrating on green tea in this article. Walnuts are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids which is good for the heart. One cup of chopped walnuts will give you about eight grams of fiber.
Green tea is loaded with anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties or components which, according to some doctors and scientists, can help fight off many illnesses including the flu and even cancer.
The Chinese and Indians have used green tea for over 4,000 years to their benefit.
Here's a summary of the health benefits of these three snack items.
1. Dark Chocolate- Be happy and healthy with a moderate amount of dark chocolate. This contains theobromine to increase energy, weight loss and fight depression. The flavinols help increase blood flow to the brain and heart. Note avoid milk chocolate as this contains little to no benefits and lots of sugar which spikes insulin levels and causes a rush of energy followed by a loss of energy. Dark chocolate should contain at least 60%-70% cacoa and is usually a bit bitter but these Powerberries are juice fruit sweeteened so I do not detect any bitterness but a very pleasant taste.
2. Raw organic walnuts- Rich in omega 3 fatty acids. one cup of chopped walnuts have about 8 grams of fiber. They also contain the minerals manganese and copper and the vitamins thiamin, B 6 and folate.
3. Green tea- Seven benefits of this powerful drink include (1) Weight loss- It increases your metabolism thus increasing the burning of calories. (2) Slows tooth decay- Research shows that the chemical "catechin" an anti-oxidanct, can destroy bacteria that causes throat infection and dental caries. (3) Blood pressure- Regular consumption of green tea is said to prevent the risk of high blood pressure. (4) Anti-viral & Anti-bacterial components are found in green tea which make this drink effective in fighting off many diseases from the flu to cancer. (5) Diabetes- Helps regulate glucose levels slowing the increase of your blood sugar after eating (6) Skin care-reduces visibility of wrinkles because of the anti-oxidants which fights off free radical damage to skin. (7) Heart disease- Some scientists think this green tea protects the lining of blood vessels to help withstand changes in blood pressure and protect against blood clots.
Tea Superior to Coffee
According to Dr. Russell Blaylock, a Board certified neurosurgeon tea is superior to coffee because it has the beneficial effect on reducing atherosclerosis.
Several studies have shown that the flavonoid components of tea can significantly reduce oxidation of tissues. Green tea contains high levels of the powerful antioxidant, quercetin, as well as special flavonoids, including epicatechin and epigallocatechin 3 gallate. These flavonoids not only reduce oxidation of LDL cholesterol, but have powerful anticancer effects as well. He also points out one of the drawbacks of consuming tea is tea consumption contains high levels of aluminum but this aluminum is not well absorbed perhaps because of the flavonoids in the tea. He says "I do caution though, never add lemon to your tea because citrate in the lemon dramatically increases aluminum absorption. In human studies, it increased absorption as much as elevenfold."
If we are sick and ill and layed up in bed then we are no good to anybody. We should be good stewards and do what we can to keep our body healthy and full of energy in which to serve the Lord and do good to others. I trust this brief article has been of help to you.
