The Beginning of a Transforming Plan
Do you get tired of all the hassles, activities, and extra work required to get ready for Christmas?
You have probably noticed commercialism pushing out the real reason for Christmas. There is a certain element in our society who resent the importance placed on Christ’s birth. Instead, they have substituted their own icons of Santa and gifts and other celebrations to take our minds off of the birth of Christ.
Christmas isn’t just a tradition to celebrate, and it’s not about a Christmas tree or gifts. It’s not about a special meal or decorating cookies, nor is it about toys or items we think we can’t live without. Many of these things are attached to our celebration and are fondly remembered, but we do not want to make them the main attraction.
It’s not my birthday, nor is it your birthday. These celebrations are important to us and a few friends. But Christmas – is Christ’s birthday, the birth of our Savior, the One whom God sent to our sin-sick world because He loved us! He came to make a way for everyone to have their sins forgiven so they could approach a Holy God. This reason was very important to Him and His Son, Jesus, for it was the beginning of a great transforming plan purposely designed to impact every single one of us. Christ’s birth began our salvation and opened up access to a relationship with an amazing God, the Maker of heaven and earth. Now that is profound!
It is good to establish times of remembrances. When the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, God told them to take twelve rocks from the path they hurried through. These rocks were then piled together and became a standing stone of remembrance for the people, a miracle they experienced that God had performed for them. To this day, that incident is one that hasn't been forgotten.
Some would like to steal away the true story of Christmas by replacing Christ’s birthday with traditions: gift giving, decorations, parties, or other satisfactions. These customs can overtake the real purpose of our celebration. We certainly don’t want that to happen. It is up to believers to keep Christ at the center of His own event. This time of the year is the best time to share Christ’s reason for coming.
This also is a good time for us to simply stop and rededicate ourselves, our lives, our dreams, and all that we are to the One who came as a baby but eventually paid the price of our salvation. We can bow down before Him like the shepherds, privileged that we too were able to be included in on the beginning of the most transforming plan that was ever conceived.
Let’s celebrate His birthday. He is the real reason for this season.
