Sunday 12/9/12 Pastor Michael sermon = A Star is Born; Wise Men Still Seek Him Matthew 2:1-12
======================================================================================================================================
Astrologists tell us that stars produce heat and light. No one knows how many stars exist but there may be 100 million stars. In America we have a term for certain people. We have labeled them stars for what they have achieved. The crème de la crème are called superstars. The average life span of a Hollywood star is about 10 years.
The star in Matthew is for Jesus Christ, the Superstar. The prophets had prophesized for hundreds of years about this superstar Jesus. This star was born a king. Verse 2: Where is he who was born King of the Jews? Jesus was born a King and didn’t have to be made a king. Jesus was already King somewhere else and he came to earth as a king. Jesus came with the authority he had already in another kingdom. Kings have power, authority and dominion!
Jesus was born a king and the wise men bowed and worshipped him. They recognized his power and authority as a baby. They didn’t act like Jesus was just a common baby. They bowed and worshipped him as a King! Jesus is God with us and they were worshipping the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. They worshipped him as a King. These wise men knew that Jesus was coming to rescue his people and that he deserved worship. We know what Jesus has already done for us so we should worship him as a King in our lives. Instead of us bowing down to our jobs, our money or our Boo, we need to bow down to Jesus and worship him. We need to lift up our hands and thank Jesus!
Jesus’s name, Immanuel, means God is with us. The wise men knew his worth as a king and bowed to worship him. Christmas is not about presents given to us. Not about our going over relative’s houses we don’t like just to eat. It is not about the exchanging of gifts to each other. Christmas is about a Star being born over 2,000 years ago. The wise men also rejoiced because they knew what Jesus was going to do. We should rejoice about what Jesus has done for us. We worshippers know who Jesus is and we have witnessed his power. We know Jesus is real! Real!
The wise men knew that Herod and the religious leaders were troubled about Jesus. They knew that now their religious system was not necessary because Jesus is a direct contact to God for us. The wise men were visited in a dream by God and were told not to return to Herod but to go another way. We too should not depend on other kings, on our jobs or on our relationships. We need to go another way too.
The wise men worshipped baby Jesus and they gave him gifts. What do we do? We give gifts to each other instead of gifts to Jesus. It’s his birthday! Give your gifts to King Jesus! It’s like going to someone’s birthday party. Instead of giving them a birthday gift, you give yourself or someone else a gift. It’s Jesus’ birthday! The wise men sought Jesus then and wise men and women today still seek Him. King Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever!
