Poetry
“What is it that you seek, O man?”
...Asked the Wise Man of the fool.
The fool said, “I seek a path with
...No God o’er it to rule.”
Said the Sage to the simple one,
...“That’s not so hard to get.
Just plot your course howe’er you like,
...And on your lusts be set.”
“As you rush to chase your dreams
...Pay no heed to those who warn.
Though the Gospel they should share,
...Be sure to laugh and scorn.”
The foolish one started out;
...Along the path he strode.
“It seems so right,” he thought inside.
...“I’m glad I picked this road.”
“I need no God!” he laughed aloud,
...As he traversed a flow’ry glen.
As he helped himself to choice delights,
...He was envied by other men.
Very soon he caught others’ eyes
...And he bade them all to come
Along with him upon his path;
...His words won over some.
But the Wise Man was close at hand
...And He called in tones most grave,
“Careful lest you die with him.
...You must turn if you’d be saved.”
A few of these did turn and leave
...The easy path the foolish trod;
They heard there was a Savior Who
...Had come with love from God.
The jealous fool raised his hands
...And shook fists in the eye
Of the Wise Man Who braved his wrath
...Even though he should die.
The foolish man struck him down.
...The Wise Man’s blood ran red.
The other fools then rashly judged
...This Man forever dead.
But the Wise Man’s God raised Him up
...And took from Him His death.
God healed His wounds and gave Him health
...And gave Him back His breath.
Now clothed in white for all to see
...The Wise Man calls aloud,
“Turn from your sin and come to Me!
...Cast off death’s ugly shroud!”
While most still tread the downward path
...Some would like to leave.
Some though chained by pride or hate,
...Are freed when they believe.
An everlasting sacrifice,
...He died once for all
And hastens when the lowly and
...The humble to Him call.
Still the fool hurries on
...Along the path he picked
And in the end the foolish man
...Will learn that he’s been tricked.
He listened to the lying tongue
...Which said he would be free
With joy and peace and hope to spare
...But he found just misery.
For in the end, there’s just one place
...Where one can find no God.
It is the place reserved for us
...Beyond the graveyard sod.
But it deeply grieves God’s heart
...When we run away from love.
The Wise Man, Christ, still calls to us,
...“Look to God above!”
