Over the years I've accumulated a lot of "stuff" also called "things" but perhaps this stuff would go by another name if an outsider were to view it. How about junk? Yes, but as the saying goes one person's junk is another person's treasure.
Among those treasures are books I've collected and purchased as part of my library. Today I removed a set of books "Great Books of the Western World" and dusted them off before placing them on a bookshelf I've had since I was a teenager. Most of these books are a pathway into humanism so even though considered classics by the world's educated elite I've avoided reading most of them except for St Augustine. I bought these while I was in my twenties at a used bookstore. There are some fifty four volumes I acquired for about %250 if I recall correctly. At least now I can reference them if necessary seeing they are easily accessible.
It's a good feeling to be organized isn't it?
Then I found a box of old letters that my great grandmother had kept on my behalf. My great grandmother saved a lot of my things as I was growing up such as my baby booties, a bib, some baby teeth and many, many letters that both of us wrote over the years along with many of my friends and acquaintances.
Today I read several of these letters and reminisced about the past. The past has a way of keeping it's distance while making you feel at home. Our memories are not always as sharp as we might like. That's why I advocate keeping a diary
or journal for how the Lord is working in your life. I have a diary dating back from eighth or ninth grade that lasted about twenty plus years but sadly I've not recorded in it for over ten years to my regret.
In the near future I'll post some of these letters. Letters are easier for me to stash than trash. A letter takes time and energy to compose and so represents life. For me it's better to cherish and preserve life than to destroy it.
Imagine if we didn't have the New Testament letters of the apostle Paul or Luke or Peter or John. Ofcourse these letters were of a different sort. They were inspired by the Holy Spirit and pertain to the church of God. Many of my letters are just personal and reflect my mindset at the time they were written or the mindset of those who wrote to me which wasn't always along spiritual things.
Have you found your letters to center around the Lord Jesus? Let me encourage you to put Jesus first in your life and never write another letter without mentioning His name. If you consider the Lord Jesus your best friend and savior then you can not forget Him can you?
Have a blessed Lord's Day.
