Sunday 8-5-12 Pastor Michael sermon = It’s Me! Overcoming the Enemy Within Matthew 4:1-11
=========================================================================
Many of us have not figured out that we have the power to succeed and accomplish something. We need to identify the distractions that will come to destroy us. Often the biggest enemy we face is in us because we went some places, done some things, hung with people we shouldn’t have. We have set ourselves back. We need to get out of the blame mentality and pointing the finger at others. We inherited this blame attitude from Adam when he blamed Eve for his sin. We are programmed to blame others for what we have done.
In the scripture, Jesus had just come from a mountain high experience. The spirit took him to the valley, the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. None of us have so much Jesus in us that we cannot be tempted by the devil. Everybody can get tempted by something.
Dealing with Temptation
a) Jesus Used the Power of the Word vs. 4
Jesus said it is written that man should live by the word coming out of God’s mouth. Jesus didn’t fall for the devil’s mess! The devil will attack your relationship with God. He will take a legitimate desire and suggest to get it, you use an illegitimate or illegal way.
Example: we are hungry so we steal for food or we want love so we have pre=marital sex instead. Legitimate desire is the need to eat. The illegitimate way is to meet it by being a glutton. Eat all the time.
We need to see that we can’t get ourselves out of the messes we got ourselves into. We only overcome it by the Word of God. We need to quote the Word to ourselves. Say the word out loud.
*** The Lord is my life and my salvation.
****The word says I can do all things thru Christ that strengthens me!
THE WORD SAYS!!!!!! THE WORD SAYS!!!!
***The word says we are the head and not the tail! When the devil bring us the temptation, we can cut the devil down with the Word!
Temptation has to have two things, Desirability and Availability. Its like when we put a sweet potato pie in the fridge and we say we are not going to eat it because its for company coming. We know its there and at 1:00 am we think about tip toeing downstairs to get a piece of pie. We have set ourselves up for the temptation. We need to do like Joseph did with Potipher’s wife and RUN! Don’t act like we are all that strong! Joseph ran and left his coat behind! FLEE !! Run for our destiny, run for our life!
Stop playing with the devil!
Many of us wait and see how close we can get before we fall. We let him or her come over at 1:00 am and say we are just going to talk. That’s playing with the devil. Don’t trust our flesh. Our flesh is the enemy within. We need to walk in the spirit so we don’t fulfill the lusts of the flesh. We will never overcome temptation if we play with it.
b) Jesus Used the Established Word vs. 7
Jesus knew the word and said don’t try to tempt /test the Lord. The devil had taken the scripture out of context to tempt Jesus by quoting part of Psalm 91.
c) Jesus Used the Power of the Exalted Word vs. 10
Jesus said the word, it is written to worship God Only! The devil always messes with us when we decide to live for God. People who never spoke to us before, start jumping up in our face talking trash, trying to test us. We need to step back and say not our will but God’s will. Let God and his Word take care of it.
