If you are, or have known a type 2 diabetic, then you understand being deprived of sweets in your diet. Like the only child on Christmas morning who doesn’t have a present under the tree, you watch everyone else get a treat. We as Christians are called to, in 1st John 2:15, not love the things in the world but rather be satisfied with the knowledge of an eternity that awaits us in a heavenly kingdom. It does often seem the world around us is celebrating defiance of God’s truth in His law which is not only mocked but disregarded. It’s also true that those who don’t know Jesus as Savior can’t know any different and it would be unreasonable for us to expect them to be motivated to live a healthy life without He who is holy living in their hearts.
Zephaniah 2:3 tells us to seek the Lord, all you meek of the earth upholding justice. In this passage, the word meek means, in part, to be afflicted by depression because you see a lack of justice in the world around you, all the while trying to live a righteous life in a society that continues to morally slide down hill at an alarming rate. It seems lying, cheating, and stealing are only frowned upon if you get caught. The respect for every level of authority as eroded as we too often ignore the ultimate authority who has put the stars in the sky and keeps the world on its axis every day without fail. Of course scripture makes it clear under grace that all things are permissible when speaking of the diet, but not all things are beneficial according to First Cor. 10:23.
Zephaniah 2:3 continues to say to seek the Lord through righteousness and humility so you’ll be hidden (that is absent) from the Day of the Lord when His judgment for those who don‘t know Jesus, and His mercy for those who do, comes. If you’ve asked Jesus into your heart then you’re already on your way to being conformed to the likeness of Christ by shedding the corruption of the world, because as a child of God, you gradually lose your taste for sinfulness. I encourage you to not despair but have mercy, believing that all judgment is in the Lord’s purview and His forgiveness is the greatest gift of all.
