Song Lyrics
You've gone away to another place
I long to see your smiling face
One more time and I'd like to say
So many things but now it's too late
You've gone away left me all alone
Without you son I am not so strong
One more time And I'd like to say
So many things but now it's too late
Why did you go and leave me behind
I wanted to die with you
Why did you go and leave me behind
Before I could say goodbye
When the rain falls
I think of you my son
When the rain falls
I start to cry again
When the rain falls
I am the way, the truth, and the life
No one can come to the Father but by Me
The words of Jesus Christ
So I say goodbye my son
Till we meet again
I'll think of you
When the rain falls
I wrote the previous song around 1995 about 16 years before Jesse died, around 6 years before he was born. The original lyrics where about a close friend—although I have never actually lost a close friend.
If I replace the word friend with son, the song seems almost prophetic in its description of the pain I feel now at losing Jesse. Plus, there was a terrible thunderstorm that late afternoon when the doctor came into Jesse’s room and told us his cancer was out of control—Jesse would die. I think of that afternoon often when the rain falls.
Is it coincidence that a song written so many years ago is so fitting now? Or is it the working of God trying to show me that He is in control? If it is the hand of God, then I can take great comfort in knowing that He is in control because the Bible says that God, ultimately, has nothing but the best in mind for his children, that all things will somehow work out for good—even my son’s death.
Is it coincidence that this C.S. Lewis quote came up on my phone the very day that I was working on this article? He said,
“You can't know, you can only believe - or not.”
In this case, that is where I find myself. Having to choose whether I believe or not. Today, I choose to believe. I pray that God will give me the grace to make the same choice tomorrow. And then, for however many tomorrows I have left until I see my Lord’s face.
