From the beginning of times span
The symbol of Christian faith began
It was known as the sign of a fish
Standing against all Christian anguish
When displayed it was freedom for all
As the persecuted would answer the call
It showed who were loyal to His name
Those who stood for the Christian fame
Evil forces tried but their results did fail
As this Christian symbol would now avail
To show this symbol will always rings true
It's one half for me and one half for you
Why is the fish meaningful to Christians?
Many early Christians were persecuted and forced to worship secretly, in which the fish symbol served as a secret form of communication. When two fellow believers would meet, one would draw half of the symbol, then the second would draw the other half, which would then resemble a fish.
It is really unknown why the fish symbol was invented. It may have been due to the Bible, on a number of occasions, showing fish were a significant aspect of Jesus' ministry. Or, it may have just been an easy sign to bring two people together.
On one occasion (Matthew 14:19), Jesus served several thousand families with a meal of bread and fish.
On another occasion (Matthew 4:19), Jesus called Peter and Andrew, saying, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.".
You see, the New Testament taught that these early Christians accepted: that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior. By a decision of faith, this person entered into a personal relationship with God and knew the reality of God's forgiveness. This new belief in Christ, was very unpopular in the religious society of that day.
"That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9, NIV).
How be it, these early Christians came under tremendous persecution, for their faith, including death. The "fish sign" was a way of displaying non-verbal communication among the new found believers.
And, this symbol still holds true today. Just look on the numerous vehicle bumpers.
