Mark 8:36 quotes Jesus “for what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” There’s not much room here for the person who’d like to have their cake and eat it too. But it’s interesting how true love motivates most of us to do whatever it takes to satisfy important relationships. When I was a very young man, I literally walked five miles in a blizzard to see a girl. When we love, whether romantic or parental love, we’ll go to any lengths to make sure we nurture that relationship. Now the following verse is not as well known, but adds insight into Jesus’ question. “Or what will a man give in exchange for his own soul?”
What would you give friend? There are many Christians around the world that have given up family because of having been disowned by them when converted. Many have been put in prison and even killed in the Name of Christ. Still others have been driven out of business because of their personal beliefs and testimony. What would you give up in exchange for your soul? We know salvation is a gift, right? But that doesn’t mean it’s free. Your gratitude, love, and faithfulness for what Jesus did by dying on the cross for you will be tested by God, to see if it’s real.
Jesus says “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” Jesus says in verse 34, “whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Do you ever deny yourself? Is your faith being tested? Verse 36 says, “whomever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s sake will save it.” The question is, do you love Jesus enough to prove it, if God tests you? I encourage you to do some soul searching to see what kind of shape your soul is in.
