Poetry
I look into the eyes of a troubled youth
See the lost hope-he’s seen too much too soon
His chocolate brown eyes ask a thousand questions
First and foremost: God you must be messin’
To put me on this vast grey earth with all this pain
With no hope of reprieve from death’s dark days
I’m struggling to survive-a product of the times
How am I supposed to recover from the works of the blind
Born into depravity, experiencing a kaleidoscope of perceptions
About who I be, what I see- like preconceived rejections
Do this, get back, go there, stay hidden-
They’ve fashioned for me a panoptic prison
Where can we go in these lone dark hours
It’s a little bit like a milk pint gone sour:
It stinks but no one wants to face it
And it’s something irrevocably wasted
I think of the chasm of lost potential
Where there is no vision, the people perish
I see a hand claw its way out of a multitude
Of perceptions and so-called informed intentions
Its that-
Unconscious thing around your jugular,
Deeply connected to the ventricular
That primitive hierarchy in your mind
That chip in the back of your head
Sending waves of data about-
STOP. Pause, break:
Allow me to introduce myself
My name is K and I look 18
But look into my soul-I’ve been knee deep
In a lifetime of lessons that left me pretty scarred
I think back on the days of Noah’s great ark
The man had faith but was rejected by the age
I guess sometimes I kinda feel the same
I pride myself on the depth of my radical mind
But you see them powers that be, they always try to bind My-
Progress, my freedom, my ability to be humane
I figure they must be afraid or outright insane
To just stamp on a thing as honourable as a scarlet concrete rose
To call me a ni-…and call my mum and sister hoes
Maya said it best when she said ‘I will rise’
Sometimes when its too much
You just gotta look to the skies
They keep it in perspective ‘cos everybody dies
Mamma said to her only son:
‘They will impregnate you with their lies’
About who you can be, where you can reach-
Don’t dare to dream hard
Try to tell you that a black man
Should always be barred
From opportunity, virtue
And ultimately from God
But like a champion fighter who’s body is a buffer
I will fly and tap into a source
let me tell you he’s like no other
Your blows have made me strong like steel
And although some emotions are a little too raw to feel
I will strike like a cobra and take back what’s mine
When all is said and done,
I’ve been empowered to do the sublime
So you don’t you imprison me in your finite mind
You see men like me, we be one of a kind
So here’s to my boys who in the end rose above
Who will woo a generation like Ali’s red glove
I’ve got the future in my hands, it’s all in my stride
And Maya said it best you know:
Again and again I’ll rise.
