Rest Is A Verb!
In these fast-paced days, we tend to think of “rest” as being one of those intangible and irrelevant things we can do with, or do without. The truth is that the process of resting is absolutely necessary to rejuvenate and restore the mind, body, and soul. With too little rest, we are not able to function properly, on any level.
Rest requires action. It’s something we must DO! Maybe when we think of rest, we think of merely doing nothing. We are, in fact, doing something, when we are resting, that is vital to doing nearly everything else.
We advise our friends and loved ones to rest quite often. Rest seems to be just the cure for cranky, young children. It seems the ideal reward for a spouse who is overworked and overly tired. It is usually our first recommendation for anyone who is feeling under-the-weather, stressed, or is facing seemingly insurmountable or traumatic situations.
Our Heavenly Father ALWAYS knows what we need, and when we need it…always has, always will! In His infinite wisdom, he has given us the gift of rest, in order that we may continue in our daily efforts. In James 1:17, the Bible says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” Rest, not slothfulness or laziness, is a precious gift that we should be thankful for.
Concentrate for a moment on the words of Jesus in the passage below. We are to come to Him when we are tired, weak, troubled, worried or burdened, and He will give us rest. Nothing is too big for God! He can handle it, if we just trust Him to do so. We are to learn of Him and take on His properties and characteristic traits. We are to strive for meekness and humbleness, and He will give us not only physical, emotional, and mental rest, but rest for our souls eternally.
Mathew 11:28-30 (KJV)
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
What an awesome God we serve! He, the creator of all, designed the human body with a vast array of amazing and complex systems that all work together so that we may work, play, and rest, in accordance with His plan. If we choose to be excessive or extreme in any of those areas, we become unbalanced and inefficient.
Let us not forget the reason we are here on this earth. We are here to love and serve Him, to love and serve others, and to be able and willing to do so. We must give ourselves the proper care, which includes rest, in order to care for others and serve Him. Our minds and bodies have built-in mechanisms, complements of our Creator, that let us know when it’s time to rest. We must listen to, and heed, the signals in order to be all He designed us to be.
Let us remember, not only that rest is a gift that we should graciously accept, but that rest is also a verb, requiring action on our part, that we should DO, when appropriate!

Very important advice. Our Lord advised us to come to him and He will give us rest. We must obey His word.
Ahh Lisa - a word of wisdom here. I need to not only read it - I need to heed it! Love, Deb
