Remember to Talk to God, Not Just About Him!

Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. Luke 6: 12-13 (NKJV)

When you find yourself really busy in the things of God, you can find that you spend all of your time talking about Jesus, but from time-to-time, you may have to stop and think, do I spend time talking to Jesus?

I love the example that Jesus set for us. He was the Son of God but yet He found prayer important for His ministry. In Luke 6, we see that Jesus had a very important decision to make in order to chose the correct disciples, and so He took that decision seriously: He took it to God. In fact, we see that He spent the entire night in prayer.

Often in the Bible, we see men of faith who rose early to pray, such as Elijah, David, Jeremiah and Samuel. Prayer was an important part of their ministry. They understood that they were not standing on their own strength but on the strength of the Father. Jesus was no different and spent many early mornings in prayer.

What about you? How much time do you spend with God? I've heard many different teachings about how much time we spend with God. Some famous preachers have avoided this question by saying “I spend all day, every day with God.” I do understand what they're saying and they're right, we need to have that interactive relationship with God which continues every moment through everything that we're doing. The book of Malachi is a wonderful book which illustrates the relationship that God desires to have with His people. This book is often only looked at when it comes to tithes and offerings, but if you read through to take a look at the relationship side and the conversation between God and His people, you can see the conversation that God has with His people and wishes to have with you and I. He wants to be just as real to us as our closest friend is. He wants to talk to you through every part of your day. However, as well as the examples set for us in the Bible, Matthew 6 highlights the importance of the 'prayer closet,' or that secret place with God. It is a place set aside for Him, to talk to Him and to hear from Him.

It's easy to get caught up in programmes, ministries and in doing good things for God. But, don't allow your strength to be zapped by doing it all by yourself. Unfortunately, many wonderful men and women of God fall from grace and I'm sure that they did not ever think that it would happen to them. I do wonder though, how far you can fall, when you give the first fruits of every day to the Father, spending time with Him and taking time to receive from Him. Talking about Him is good. But talking to Him is even better.

Prayer:
Thank you, God, that you desire to spend time with me. Thank you that You are my strength and help me to always remember that. As I spend time talking about You today, help me to remember to spend time talking to You. In Jesus name, Amen.
