What wretched work hath sin wrought
that makes the mourner sad?
What sacred wombs hath Christ bought
for chosen ones so glad?


What languid minds in despair
can catch the goodly news?
What solemn sounds fill the air
from drunkards drunk on boos?


What wondrous love comes from God
who sets the prisoners free?
What shadows the verdant sod
on many a bended knee?


What perfect gift did He bring
to sinners such as us?
With thankful hearts we should sing
and not make such a fuss.


The evening dawns now my dear
and mortals like us must pass
to heav'n above, there no fear
but joyfully saints surpass.
