Psalm 119.130
Care … or care …?
“The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” [Psalm 119.130 NASB]
How many times have we been greatly troubled in our thinking, perplexed in our emotions and in a negative state of financial anxiety? Then God has quickened a word, which has brought us mental clarity, emotional insight and financial understanding?
After such an experience, we feel that we could spiritually take off; and realize that we would also dearly love to hear such a word every day.
However, there are two previously prepared prerequisites before this can be allowed to happen on a daily basis.
First, we need to be spiritually capable of receiving God's revelation. In [Matthew 11.25], Jesus thanked God for revealing His purpose to those who were spiritually immature instead of the conceited, but who were also single-hearted and who desired above everything else, to hear all that He was saying.
Secondly, we need to be able to understand what He has said. Many people, at that time, heard His message, but in proportion to the masses, very few people actually understood what He had meant.
Why the discrepancy? It is only those who are spiritually discerning who are able to hear and understand His words. The "key" to this verse is revelation.
How often have we all been in the same meeting, sung the same songs, heard the same word being taught - and yet some people immediately grasp, understand and put into practice the underlying principle, which the Spirit of the Lord is putting across … and the rest enjoy the meeting.
The desire to hear God is an on-going process. We all start out as an enquirer and then we become a disciple, and then, through constant and efficient use of our spiritual discernment, we become mature disciples, and then, like Mary, we are sitting at the Lord's feet, ready to hear and immediately obey.
Who or what makes the difference? Some people are intentionally self-centred in a good sense and, more importantly, there are also those who have the Lord's interests at heart.
In other words, in the midst of our congregations, there are those who are careful in a normal way and there are also those who are carefree in a spiritual way.
