Perfect Peace

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)

I have on numerous occasions heard Christians in the western world describe the will of God based on circumstances around them. Let me try to explain what I mean: I remember a friend of mine who was purchasing a business. Everything was going smoothly, which they took to interpret that God was in control and that this was obviously His perfect will. Another example would be if somebody felt called to missions and suddenly received an unexpected tax return, which happened to cover their travel expenses. Yes, we would all say that God was in control and this was 'obviously' His will. But there is a problem with this theory. What if we reverse it, is it still true? If things are going terribly, does that mean that God is not in control? If we feel called to missions and the money is not 'miraculously' arriving on our doorstep, does that mean that it wasn't part of God's will?

In many parts of the world, doing the will of God involves huge risk and persecution. It also involves going without many times so that we can raise the money to do the will of God. God promised He would always be with us (Heb 13:5), He has promised us joy in the eternal life (Rev 21:4), he has promised His Holy Spirit as our helper (John 16:7), but He did not promise that doing His will would be easy.

Ask God to give you an assurance of His will for your life. Find a verse that you can cling onto. Then go about doing the will of God that you feel called to do and let your mind stay in perfect peace, that no matter what the circumstances that surround you are, you are doing the will of the Father. Let your mind be 'stayed' upon Him.

God is a great provider. He is a great comforter. On many occasions in my life, he has provided exactly what I've needed. But when I am in times of less, it does not mean that He has abandoned me. He is as close to me when times are tough as He is when times are good. My mind needs to be kept in perfect peace, knowing that no matter what's going on around me, He is always in control and guiding me by His Holy Spirit.

Prayer:
Father, please do confirm your will for my life as I step into a new direction seeking after your will. No matter what my calling – even if it's to remain faithful to my local church at this time – please give me a promise from your word, so that I can stay in peace, knowing that you are guiding me, no matter what is going on around me. In Jesus name, Amen.
