Monday 1-9-12 While talking with an associate I told him I was doing today's article on the subject of learning and shared this bit with him:
"Always desire to learn something." He remarked, "Sounds like something from a new translation to me." I assured him the quote was not from an old or new translation of scripture and if this was the full quote I doubt that it would be found in either as a positive statement. I toyed with his mind, not a large task for a while and then shared the one word left off of the quote. The quote then makes biblical sense. Note the source of the quote also and then ask why does this statement sound biblical?
"Always desire to learn something useful." Sophocles.
If you think Sophocles is a biblical character I don't know that I can be much help to you. Yet he states a biblical truth. The biblical truth of his statement is verified in the Old and New Testament. I have found that checking the ideas of ancient writers, leaders and others against the backdrop of scripture is helpful and I will not knowingly use a quote that is in opposition to biblically revealed truth.
I do not spend much time being entertained as by any measure my time is shorter than before and I attempt to make time count. Useful is a key to my study. I am not a mechanic so I don't read manuals on autos. I am not a brain surgeon so not much time is wasted in that area. Concerning this Isaiah wrote Isaiah 8:20 "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." As to learning as a continuing practice Solomon wrote in Proverbs 9:9 "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning." Do you have a life lesson plan for 2012? Keep useful in mind.
