Redeem the time

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, for the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15,16

Scientists try to find tares in it. Beauticians try to slow it down. Lovers try to lengthen it and inmates try to shorten it. You and I? Well, we mostly just learn to live with it. We sit quietly as it paints its wrinkles across our face and puts it’s silver highlight in our hair. We’re thankful when it heals our wounds, but then again were angry when it’s greedy with a moment.

The relationship the you and I share with time is interesting to say the least. It’s a relationship that none of us have chosen, but all of us are forced to nurture. You see, we all walk through this life, unwillingly wed to the same emotionless partner….time.

But here is the interesting thing about time. Though it has numbered our days, it does not dictate what we must do with them. It doesn’t care how it is spent only that it is spent. One man spends his day embittered while another if filled with joy. One woman spends her day riddled with guilt while another relishes in God’s grace. Another man spends his day at the racetrack while still another feeds the homeless. What is times’ response to each of these? Indifference. It doesn’t care. It gives the same amount of seconds, minutes and hours to each. So what am I really trying to say? I’m saying that since you are going to spend time anyway, why not spend it on something worthwhile? Why not “Redeem” it as the Apostle Paul suggests.

How do you do that?

Well, here’s one way. For one day, treat time like it’s your most valuable possession. Now, I understand that this may be a foreign concept to some. Most of us think of our boats or our houses or our bank accounts as our most valuable possessions, but really their not. Time is. Think about it this way… it takes time to earn money, but no amount of money can buy back any amount of time.

So take the day and spend your time wisely. What you will find is what you never expected. That is, that the priceless things in this life are not purchased with money, but rather with time.
