Mormonism has become a hot issue, ignited by the U.S. presidential election. So what does one think when he or she sees two people in black suits walking or riding bicycles down the street? Are they Christians sharing the good news of God's love and healing with anyone who will listen?
Let's see. They use the Bible, but also the Book of Mormon. They adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ but also follow Joseph Smith. When they say they are followers of Christ do they mean the same Jesus as other "Christians?" And what about salvation and a person's eternal destiny?
I have never personally studied Mormonism, but I do know two ex-Mormons. In talking with them they both have told me that Mormons follow a "different" Jesus.
Let's review the basic tenets of Christian thought. God exists in 3 persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on a cross and rose again. Jesus was and is God in human flesh, not just another one of many gods. He is coming again to this earth. The Bible is the sole divine, inspired authority for faith and practice, and people are saved by grace through faith, not dependent upon any form of works.
To be considered a Christian one must adhere to these basic beliefs, nothing less, and nothing added to them.
I have heard some say that Mormons are Christians because they follow Jesus. So what! I can follow Abraham Lincoln, but what is the point of that? It is what we believe ABOUT Christ that makes the difference, and what we use as our source of authority.
Yes, Mormons believe many of the same doctrines as other professing Christians, but my two ex-Mormon friends have related to me, not only beliefs that are added to the basic doctrines, but also I would describe as just, well...really, really wierd, including strange teachings about Christ, which are totally outside the arena of Christian doctrine and do not come from the Bible.
A big question to ask is: do they believe they are better off in their earthly life and eternal destiny by adding the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith? If they do, they have given Jesus and the Bible a subdominant position of authority.

By doing so, they can sound Christian. Which is exactly what the devil does, he tries to imitate and thus appear genuine.
Specifics:
Our Jesus = Always existed, was God always and always will be, divine, CREATOR.
Their Jesus = a CREATED being, the brother of Satan. CREATED by a physical union of Elohim (God) and Mary.
God for Christians - see above.
God for Mormons: "As man is, God once was; as God is, man can become". All good Mormon men can become a God if they follow all the rules of Mormonism closely, have the temple and holy underwear ritual and get in good with Joseph Smith......
Salvation for Christians: By faith in Christ alone.
Salvation for Mormons: by works and no one gets there without Joseph Smith's approval. Yes Christ died for them and it is he that resurrects them. But not saves them. And their christ is not creator God anyhoo, just some dude who was a bright shining example who lived a marvelously good life and was exalted to Godhood himself finally!
There's a whole lot more. You should start to get the picture now. Same words, Jesus, salvation, God, faith, etc. Entirely different meaning.....
check it out yourself, see if I am kidding.....
Also if you haven't seen it, get a copy of the file "The God Makers". Good eye opener. The Mormon church had threatened any Mormon who watched it with excommunication...... what does that tell you?
