(excerpt from Morning Meditations by Martin Wiles)
Matthew 14:29-30 Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. (NLT)
My students probably thought I enjoyed it. The red x’s. Bleeding all over their discussion questions. Putting their final score at the top in large red numbers. But I didn’t. I never relished failing a student. Particularly disturbing was the instance when I failed the principal’s son.
I could identify with many of the students. Prior to college, school was unimportant. Doing homework and studying for tests came last on the day’s laundry list-if they were there at all. But I didn’t’ want to fail. That would entail repeating the torture.
Failing a test or grade is unpleasant. Failing God is worse, and Peter seemed to be a pro at it. It was three a.m., and the disciples were boating in the middle of a lake when Jesus suddenly appeared, walking on the water.
After recovering from the initial shock, Peter asked Jesus to let him walk to him on the water. Jesus agreed. And Peter fared well until he noticed the high waves striking at his ankles. Fear took over, faith left, and Peter sank.
Having a reputation as the “sinking disciple” probably disturbed Peter, but not enough to prevent future failures. Later Jesus informed the disciples they would all forsake him. Peter protested that he would die first. But Jesus was right. At Jesus’ arrest, Peter ran like all the others, later denying he even knew Jesus.
Do you have many “failing God” episodes to your credit? I do. Mine probably add up to several years’ worth. What comforts me is what happened when Peter started sinking. He cried out for Jesus to save him, and he did. He didn’t say, “Well, Peter. That’s it for you. No more being my disciple.” Peter was given repeated chances and so are we. God’s forgiveness and grace are unlimited.
Don’t let your past failures prevent you from serving God in the present and future. God’s grace always provides strength for another step forward.
Prayer: Lord, when our failures have paralyzed us, remind us You have forgiven and are the God of unlimited second chances. www.morningliteministry.com
