Book Reviews
Cathy’s Secret , by Cindy Tuttle, is the story of a woman’s difficult journey to faith. Cathy’s life has never been easy. Orphaned at a young age, she ends up in a homeless shelter. But there’s something special about Cathy that seems to draw people to her. Before her death, Cathy’s mother even hinted at a special “secret” that Cathy possesses. While living in the shelter, Cathy acquires a friend and father figure in an older man named Joe after she saves his life, and Cathy’s bond with him is cemented further when she’s able to locate Joe’s runaway son, Bill, who succumbed to the temptation of drugs. Meanwhile, Cathy begins to fall in love with Tom, another resident of the homeless shelter who’s also fallen on tough times.
But then Joe dies unexpectedly, and Cathy experiences a breakdown. She realizes that she must learn to come to terms with her abusive past before she can fully trust and love other people. Now living in Joe’s home, which he left to her in his will, Cathy begins to heal and feel God’s presence through the care of a Christian counselor named Jim, a new church family, and Tom’s continued love. Cathy and Tom find jobs and get married, but then tragedy strikes again when their baby girl dies before birth and Cathy is stricken with a serious infection. Will Cathy’s newfound faith in God survive? And will she uncover the “secret” that her mother said was her spiritual gift?
In reading this book, I really admired Cathy’s determination to build a life of meaning despite the many setbacks and tragedies that befell her. I learned that God is always with us, especially during times of trouble, and that we all have a purpose in life. When we reach out to others and allow them to reflect God’s love for us, we’re never alone on our life’s journey. If you like Christian or inspirational fiction, you’ll want to read Cathy’s Secret.
