Despised and rejected, of lowly esteem;
Expected by all yet came mostly unseen,
A soft tender shoot in a desert of sand
A root to bring hope to a dry barren land
Appearing as quite unappealing to man—
He comes to His place as the Father has planned.

Forsaken by all, Man of Sorrows and grief,
Unknown in our midst—fruit of mans’ unbelief—
Thought smitten by God, as afflicted and torn
But price of our sin in His love He has borne,
So meekly He goes like a sheep to be shorn--
Our place takes this One so afflicted, forlorn.

As Lamb to the slaughter in silence is led,
Cut off from the living as Isaiah said;
Outcast of outcasts with the wicked is killed—
Such seeming injustice the Father has willed—
Let mouths of all nations before Him be stilled!
His foretold redemption in detail’s fulfilled.

Yet still to this day what so many can’t see
Is Christ has fulfilled all of this prophecy;
So many still see Him an outcast, despised:
I pray that the Father would open their eyes,
The barren might sing, that their faith would arise
To know Him as Saviour and Lord of their lives!

The desert will bloom and the sands will retreat
And children will flourish and play in its street;
The outcasts will gather to Zion the blessed
Will relish the peace that at last they possess
Through all of creation His glory expressed
The land and the people enjoy perfect rest.
