God In The Mirror
Romans 12:5
(excerpt from Morning Meditations by Martin Wiles)
Romans 12:5 And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the others. (NLT)
My wife and I love mirrors, and since we are antique dealers we especially love old mirrors. But it’s actually not the mirror we love. It’s the frame that enshrines it.
At one auction we were fortunate to find a large mirror in a beautifully carved golden frame. It was extremely heavy, and upon examination I discovered why. Not only was there a mirror in front but there was also one that served as the backing. The price we paid for it made it an even greater treasure.
Old mirrors are not usually in perfect shape. Some have hairline cracks or other irremovable marks. This one wasn’t either. Age spots were sprinkled about. I suppose some people would not buy a mirror with defects since it distorts the image of anything reflected. Minor flaws don’t bother me. In fact, I propose mirrors with marks are better than those without because they reflect reality. Even a flawless mirror reflects flawed images. Mirrors don’t change what they mirror. They just, well, mirror.
This verse states believers are the body of Christ, but I have a better phrase-mirrors of Christ. Jesus was only visibly seen on earth for thirty three years. Since his resurrection, he has only been seen in his followers. Which causes me to reflect. What image of Christ is seen when others look in my life mirror? Am I distorting Him with preventable flaws?
Sure I’m not perfect, but am I less perfect than I could be? Do I have changeable attitudes? What about that morning when I was in a bad mood. While talking with work associates, criticism, complaints and gossip crept out. Or the time I mumbled unmentionables under my breath or expressed them out the window at the person who almost sideswiped me?
God has staked his reputation on smudged mirrors. While we’ll never reflect Him perfectly, there is always room for improvement. If you’ll excuse me, I need the glass cleaner. There are some spots I need to take care of.
Prayer: Father, remind me Your reflection to others depends on what they see in me.
