Colossians 2:6-8
(excerpt from Morning Meditations by Martin Wiles)
Colossians 2:7 Let your roots grow down into him and draw up nourishment from him, so you will grow in faith. (NLT)
People have always said I have a green thumb, but I’m convinced my mother and mother-in-law’s thumbs are greener. Both live in areas where the predominant soil is clay-red, hard to dig in when dry and nasty when wet. I’ve watched Mom take a spoon, dig a small hole, and plunge a flower into it. Within a week it seems to have doubled in size. I’ve witnessed the same scenario with my mother-in-law.
I on the other hand plant the same flower-purchased at the same time and location, in a hole carefully prepared with potting soil, and it takes my flower two months to do what theirs did in one week. I may be able to grow a pretty vegetable garden, but when it comes to flowers my mother and mother-in-law have me whipped. Maybe it’s the plant food they use. Or perhaps the clay, instead of repelling the roots, clings to them and gives the plant firm footing.
Roots are important. They are in the spiritual realm too. A flower placed in a pot too small for its root system will eventually wither and become unhealthy. The cure is a larger pot. Shallow soil is, well, shallow. The root of the matter is lack of root room. Some roots are simply not suited for confining pots.
We are responsible for allowing our spiritual roots to grow down into Christ so healthy faith results. Unhealthy faith leads to spiritual immaturity which in turn can be characterized by spiritual unrest, lack of interest, misplaced priorities, constant searching for fulfillment, and habits that don’t fit our new position in Christ.
Spiritual withering can signal root problems. Either there is insufficient nourishment or my sustenance is coming from the wrong sources. Adequate nutrients only come from a vigorous faith walk where every day and its details are entrusted to an Almighty God who loves me and you unconditionally.
Prayer: When I’m tempted to draw my nourishment from inadequate or unholy sources, Lord draw me back to Your fertile soil where my spiritual roots can run deep.www.morningliteministry.com
