According to Proverbs 1:5 “Let the wise listen and add to their learning”
You will never reach your highest potentials without a good coach. It’s impossible. You may be good, better than most, but without help you will never be as good as you could’ve been. Why would a world class tennis player like Andre Agassi needs a coach, especially one‘s not as good on the court as he is Agassi says: Tennis requires subtle adjustments crucial to winning, and my coach, Gil, is the best at making them. The older I get, the more valuable he becomes. Why because age and experience don’t necessarily make you better; often they just deepen the rut you’re in. in the world of athletics, nobody performs his way but of needing a coach. Yet many of us operate under the misguided assumption that because we lead, we don’t need to be led. We make the mistake of measuring ourselves against others, instead of our God-given potential, so in the end we never become what we could have been. Self-evaluation is good, but the evaluation of others is better. A good coach will always measure your performance against your strengths, not somebody else’s. That’s because he knows what you’re capable of and he will push you to your limit. By the way, good coaches are on the scene observing, not back at office waiting for a report. That’s because they’re personally invested in your success; a win for you is a win for them. So why don’t you prayerfully consider getting a coach.
You will never become a great leader until you become a great learner! Learning requires submission, and submission isn’t something we’re comfortable with often times. We think submission is just for those other people who need to be led? This is especially true in our early years when we’re sure we already know it all and use every opportunity to prove it. Engaging a leadership coach requires a willingness to submit to others. If you’re not teachable, you’re not reachable. The more you think you know, the less likely you are to place yourself under the influence of those who really know and can help you. This is especially true when you view yourself as more capable, passionate or talented than the people around you. Wisdom always seeks counsel! A wise man knows his limitations, only a fool believes he has none. Only the naïve or arrogant operate under the assumption that they can make all the right calls without input from others.
Here are a few of Solomon’s thoughts on seeking counsel:
1. The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice (Proverbs 12:15 NIV)
2. Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. (Proverbs 15:22 NIV)
3. Listen to advice and accept instruction and in the end you will be wise (Proverbs 19:20 NIV)
It’s not what your coach knows; it’s what he sees that makes him valuable to you. He’s an extra pair of eyes, so why be without them…
So what exactly does a leadership coach do?
1. Observe
2. Instruct
3. Inspire
At first, the thought of having someone evaluate you may be intimidating. But think about it: people are watching you anyway, so why not plant a coach amongst the crowd. The following is a list of areas in which you might consider inviting a leadership coach (or a mentor) to evaluate you:
a. Spiritual development
b. Personal discipline
c. Family relationship
d. Decision making
e. Handling finances
f. Conflict resolution
g. Picking the right people
h. Goal setting and strategic planning.
Look for an environment where you will be coached not just paid. In your early years what you learn is more important than what you earn. Actually, what you learn early determines what you earn later. What you don’t know can hurt you; it can put a lid on your potential. You owe it to yourself and those who depend on you to open the doors of evaluation. And don’t let it stop with you. Pass on to somebody else what you’ve been given. Jesus said, freely you have received; freely give (Matthew 10:8). But I am too young; nobody is going to take me seriously. Forget all of that. You are not responsible for know everything/ you are just responsible for sharing what you know to others. As you pour into their cups what God and others have poured into yours, they will go further, faster too. So, get a coach and be blessed. Become a coach and be a blessing to others!
