The concept of "being called" is grossly overused and at the same time has no clear meaning. It is another one of those religious phrases void of meaning.

Let's examine the practical application of the word first, be defining it. It means different things to a variety of people, thereby causing much confusion when it comes to living it out in obedience to God. Some Christians who have experienced a true calling, have no further need to grapple with its meaning. Others flounder through life trying to discover their calling because no one has ever clearly defined it.

If a person is living his or her true calling it can be an exciting experience, even with adversity. But if someone pursues a ministry believing it to be a calling when it is not, it can have very negative consequences, both for the person and the ministry.

The best definition of calling is one I heard from a missionary who visited my church. It has five elements:
1. A passion and sense of urgency.
2. An open door of opportunity.
3. Using one's abilities and gifts.
4. Evidence of God's blessing in people's lives.
5. Other people recognize it.

Yet, I hear people all the time say that they FEEL called, when it really has very little to do with feelings. All five elements must be present, and God will confirm them over time.

So, be very careful when you say you are called to do something. Test it, using these five elements.
