Grace comes in the morning
So I stayed up all night
I need the next day
At midnight.
I cry out to God
And feel Him resting there
I ask for perfect love
To cast out all my fears.

I can do my two miles tomorrow
I will read my Bible verse
But I wrestle at the point when
I feel I've slaked my thirst.
For I ever hunger for the things
That please myself
So I hold out this beggar bowl
And ask for something else.
It is filled with me
And that is why it is empty
Please place your crumbs in instead.

I stay up late and get up early
To prove I can still get it done,
I ask for nothing so I can complain
When nothing fills my bowl.
We are crazy
I don't doubt I am mad
But Lord, I need to love you
Need to leave the past.

God never reaches the quitting time
Never says it's too late
He never tires of listening
I can honestly say when I retreat
I rest in Him.
We are all a little restless
All searching
But we gain everything
When we lose
ourselves.
And that is why I wait for grace at midnight-
So I find more than my need for sleep
I find the Shepherd
Before the alarm clock beeps.
