My heart was like a desert,
No feelings, only dry.
I searched for what was wrong
But found no answer though I tried.

He revealed to me a river
Running deep within a well,
But I could not seem to reach it,
Though I tried, I always failed.

I checked the rope and bucket
To see if they could be,
The reason that no water
Was coming up to me.

All seemed to be in place
For supplying what I needed,
But the river seemed too far away
Though I cried and sometimes pleaded.

I questioned why it happened
When the water used to flow,
In the past it was refreshing
And His peace I seemed to know.

He told me that as time goes by
The river erodes away,
Any loose and worthless sediment
To clear a new pathway.

The river had not ceased to run
Nor lost any of its power,
To refresh my weary spirit
Even in my driest hour.

I needed to lengthen the rope a bit
By an amount that He would tell,
And then He gently spoke to me,
“Son, go deeper in the well.”

I have found it to be true
When I’m parched and oh, so dry,
By going deeper in the well
He satisfies my deepest cry.

So it may not be a broken rope
Or cracks within the pail,
He just might want to stretch us
To go deeper in the well!
