The Bible speaks of generational curses. This raised many questions in my mind for years. What is a generational curse? Did my family have one. Are they from Satan? If so, how does one break it? Although I do not believe that they are necessarily from Satan (that possibility does exist), adversity results from them.

Based upon what I have read and my own experience here is my definition of a generational curse: any destructive pattern of attitudes, behavior, or response to a circumstance or person, passed down from a previous generation, that continues to bring negative consequences, and makes it impossible for God to bless your life or your families life.

Here are some examples:

1. Was your dad an angry person and now you are too?
2. Did someone in your family have a habit of holding
on to bitterness and resentment, and now you do the same?
3. Did someone in your previous generation always resort to
using sex, drugs, or alcohol to deal with stress, anxiety or
depression, and you do too?

A generational curse is a learned negative, destructive response or mindset picked up from people before you. It is a dysfunction that has become a norm.

If you think you may have a generational curse, then you need to determine to reverse it. How does one do this? Realize, first of all, that some things are a spiritual battle. Claim God's power over Satan. Then go to work on what needs to be done to break the habit, or pattern of behavior. It will take a constant diet of positive and spiritual input into your brain. You will have to literally reprogram your thinking and "be transformed by the renewing of your mind," as it says in Romans 12:2. God can deliver a person from a generational curse overnight, but He generally does not work this way. He wants us to grow out of it.
You may also have to change the type of people with whom you associate or alter your living environment.
