Exodus 18:20 Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform.

What is foundational learning? Foundational learning is a term I use in referring to the basic teachings that our children should learn at an early age.

Okay, what are they?

1. A simplified version of the Ten Commandments, or Matthew 22:37 `Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.'

2. Basic moral understandings. Violence and hatred --- Matthew 5:38 "You have heard that it was said, `Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Cursing – Proverbs 4:24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.

3. Establishing communication. How can you teach without communication. Use anything and everything to keep communication in the household. Family is important. God created the family when he created Adam and Eve. We are to be a close-knit unit.

4. Prayer – should be introduced as early as possible. From the time of birth you can say prayers over your child verbally where they can hear you. Continue as the child ages, and let them take over with their own prayers.
