1 Corinthians 8:9 "Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak".
We are christians. We love God. We detest evil things. We have made up our minds to do only what exalts Him.
But often times, we find ourselves on a path that naturally "doesn't lead to destruction". Yes naturally because most times we don't see the immediate implications of our actions so we conclude that maybe they are not bad after all.
I could remember when I gave my life to Christ, I was on fire for Him, always trying to please Him and all. I have always loved music even before I came to the truth so when I met Big J, I decided to stay within the confines of gospel music.
During these period of my life, all secular songs including those with reasonable lyrics just wouldn't get my attention. But as time went on the story changed. I started off by downloading like 3 secular songs with funny lyrics on my phone and it later increased. Before one could blink, I started dancing to these songs and singing in the presence of my newly converted brother and sister and the rest of the family who were yet to give their lives to Christ.
One day, the Holy Spirit reminded me that I am not of this world, eventhough I live in this world. The good Spirit opened my eyes to the truth in Galatians 5:16 which says "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. He pointed to the fact that to live in the flesh leads to death while living in the Spirit leads to life.
That was mine. We all have our different stories. What is that one thing that you indulge in that causes the weak to stumble, that causes unbelievers to conclude that "maybe we are not different afterall".
You know that thing, and I believe that the Holy Spirit made it possible for you to be reading this at this very moment for you to review your ways.
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 8:11 that we should be painstaking and ensure that our knowledge does not destroy our brothers in christ because when you engage yourself in such acts that causes your brother to fall into sin then you have sinned against Christ.
But you might want to protest that can't you be free? Absolutely! Even the Bible confirms our freedom in Galatians 5:1 by ascertaining that "it is for freedom that Christ has set us free" but cautions us in verse 13 of the same chapter "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature".
Remember that everything is permissible but not all things are beneficial to us. We are not just people, we are the citizens of Zion. We are the light of the world that cannot be hidden. Stop trying to conform to the things of this world, you are the salt of this world and you must not lose your taste. Be who God wants you to be and make it easy for all to say to you what was said to Peter "He looks like one of them".
