Encouragement
If we go into any bookshop we are sure to find many books on the advantages of having a good memory. Improving our memories will enrich our lives, so they tell us, and we will be able to astound others with our wonderful powers of recall. All very commendable of course, for there are many advantages to possessing a healthy and reliable memory.
However, our lives are sometimes bedevilled with disturbing memories that we fervently wish we could forget, and we may find ourselves brooding on the unpleasant things and the difficult people, or the troublesome influence of some disturbing incident.
And, as odd as it seems, we should not dwell on our successes and the things we have done well in the past either, for no matter how proud we may be of them, nothing is more tiresome to others than if we never stop bragging about our achievements or our talents or our splendid possessions.
So forget past troubles or failures or resentments, for it is a criminal waste of our valuable time brooding over some real or imagined slight, or past mistake. Constant worrying and fretting does not solve the problem, or erase the painful memory, but will only bring despair, misery, or worse still some physical or emotional breakdown.
Our best plan is to take action as quickly as possible to amend the situation. If nothing can be done then we must accept the fact and move on. We can then understand that no matter what distress the problem may have given us we have learned something very useful. And learning is one of life’s greatest gifts.
Even when we have made a mistake where the consequences are of some gravity the truth remains that what has happened, has happened. No amount of tears or self- recrimination can undo what has happened – the future is what must concern us now. We only hurt ourselves and deprive ourselves of any happiness if we continue to hang on to the bitterness and resentment that has been gnawing away at us.
But if we make the effort to forget the negative stuff once and for all, then we allow ourselves to move onward, and grow in maturity and self esteem.
