Christian Living
Many people are born again but continue living in bondage. Although we are told in 2Corinthians 5:17 that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, some of us continue to be affected, in the inner man, with all manner of afflictions. Yet in Jesus Christ, there is true and absolute freedom. We may even be referred to certain other mystical people to pray for us but we do not have to look for deliverance from fellow men because in the Word, there is true freedom, true healing and true deliverance by obedience to Christ who Himself declared in John 8:32 that we shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free.
Each and every one of us needs inner healing, the foundations of which are firstly for one to have a relationship with Christ by being born again. It is in transformation that the power of inner healing is found; this may sometimes entail pain as Christ prunes and shape us but is well worth it in the long run.
Secondly we should grow as disciples of Jesus Christ by actively engaging in the spiritual disciplines in the way that He has shown us by example. These include prayer, fasting, study of the Word, meditation, submission, solitude and stewardship to mention but a few. This is an important aspect of building our foundation in Christ and helping us in the healing of the inner being. There are no specialists in prayer and intercession because in salvation, we are a royal priesthood who should engage in prayer and supplication. We may depend on what a pastor has prepared for us to sustain and encourage us but we should remember that those sermons are as a result of his own time with God. He may have engaged in the spiritual disciplines the whole week in order to be able to come up with what he now gives the congregation. This leaves us out because we have not really done our part as Christians and as co-heirs to the inheritance.
The pastor cannot do for us what Christ expects of us because salvation is about a personal relationship with the Lord. Each and every one is expected to live a certain way and to also bring others into the kingdom. Which then brings the question of how often we meditate on God’s Word; are we the kind of Christians who only ask from but never take time to listen to God? Meditating on the splendor of His majesty heals us of our own selfish expectations and self-centered demands.
Although we may all want to be recognized for our efforts, submission is really about letting others be seen. Solitude and quietness before the Lord makes it possible for us to be attentive to the Holy Spirit. Stewardship is about proper management of God’s creation, this too is required of us, that we may steer His children to the right direction.
Most of us do not enjoy Christianity because we have not yet grasped the importance of the above disciplines. Although they are meant for us, witnessing is also required of us in our market places whether we are doctors, writers, researchers, janitors, teachers, sportsmen or whatever it is that we do for a living. We must witness to those that do not know Christ because we have all been commissioned for this. When we live in accordance with what God expects of us, we receive inner healing which connects us to benefits of God’s promises. This is documented in Isaiah 61-3-that we are to preach, bind up, deliver and release all those who are in bondage. We can however not forget ourselves in these deliveries because the Christian mission is not complete if it does not bring real freedom to the believer. If we repent but continue to sin, if we used to live in fear and still do, if we were gossips and still are, then the good news of Jesus Christ has not done us any good; we are still in bondage and we need healing.
