Though an army encamp against me, even then do I trust . . .
Psalms 27:3
Sometimes, it seems that we have to deal with two or three crisis at a time. Maybe we have children who are sick, our job is getting too stressful, and we have a close friend who has just died. It may seem like the world has closed in on us, and we want to yell, “Stop!” I believe these are the situations to which the Psalm is referring.
We can become overwhelmed and handle the situations in a self-destructive way, like drinking too much, relying on drugs, abusing others, isolating ourselves, or running away from our problems. Many of us have used these methods for years. It becomes an instinctive habit of retreat, and it is very difficult to break.
Not only do I think the Psalm is written to help us trust in God, but also in ourselves. We must believe that God has given us gifts to handle such situations, if only we turn to Him in prayer. Just knowing that God understands and knows the situation and how you feel can be supportive. However, I understand that, for some people, getting angry at God isn’t an option. I have come to learn that anger is a feeling we all have from time to time, and God already knows you are angry, anyway. By telling Him you are angry, you let Him know that your relationship is close enough that you are comfortable sharing your most intimate emotions. Know that it is all right to express to God all your feelings—not just those that seem “holy.” Once we are able to recognize our feelings, it is easier to look objectively on why we are experiencing those emotions, and we can learn to handle the situation in the most compassionate way possible. We can be compassionate others in that situation, as well as to ourselves.
I have found that trusting God with our feelings and situations is extremely helpful in dealing with major challenges. In addition, this trust helps us grow in our relationship with God. Trusting that God has given us the tools to deal with difficult situations is a key element in our spiritual growth. Sometimes, the best thing we can do to deal with complicated situations is ask for help from a friend, a program, or counselor. In that case, we are using our gift of humility and self-awareness. Many times, we can’t do things on our own. Those are the times we need to ask for help.
Another way this scripture can be helpful is by trusting that God is so intimate with me, knows what kind of love I need. He has more love for me than I can imagine. Knowing that love is given to me in prayer, through other people, and through nature, I realize that God is everywhere. He wants us to open our eyes, and see the great joy He has for us. Even in times of crisis, I have been able to experience His joy, if only for a brief time. It has kept me going and helped me realize I am not alone.
