Have you ever been told upon entering a home to take off your shoes? You quickly pull them off while praying inwardly that you remembered to put the socks with no holes on, or that your feet wouldn’t stink? You then went in, and immediately found yourself standing on a clean, blemish-free carpet. The owner of the house wanted it kept that way -outside filth or dirt, was not welcomed.
So, consider Moses upon seeing the burning bush, and being asked by God to remove his shoes because of the sheer holiness of the presence of God. Moses was asked to remove his shoes because no filth Moses may have carried with him could abide in God’s presence. Moses had walked with those shoes a long time, and I’m sure they were caked with mud, perhaps animal dung, and maybe even insects – “Take off your shoes, for this is holy ground”.
Thus, it is like us today. We have a tendency to walk around all day, all week, all month, all year, - in filth. We then come before God’s presence with the sins of fornication, lying, cheating, backbiting, stealing, lust, hatred and envy caked upon our feet. Remember our feet bring us everywhere we go. We walk into his presence leaving a filthy trail behind us, of every dirty thing we have walked through. As we approach him, we stand before him in shoes laden with the debris of the world. He has asked us to take them off.
So let us take off “our shoes” not shake them off, or drag them across the welcome mat hoping to wipe them off, but take them off. So that we are able to stand before him with clean feet, discarding the cares of the world, ready to put on the shoes of righteousness.
Then we hear him saying, “Come on in - I’ve been expecting you.”
