Deeper and deeper in Bible research, part 2


Our language is such a mix of other languages, slang, new words (mostly from products like xerox, gas, mickey dee's etc.) that it's a wonder we even understand one another. When you add texting to the soup it gets worse. The disappearance of the written word (on paper, that is) will leave future historians wondering where the 21st century went. There is a rumor that the government has box cars loaded with floppies from the 1980's and 90's with documents and code on them that most likely no one will be able to read because the programs have disappeared and the programmers long dead. Y2K lives again in retrospect ! When we say the Word of God we even open up a discussion group that draws out any and all opinion, input, suggestion etc. on “relevance” and interpretation. We have wandered so far off the trail that even GPS can't help us (oops, more technology !).

The study of the ancient root language of Hebrew, the language in which the Bible (Torah) was first actually written, is seeing a tremendous surge in involvement by scholars, teachers, students and those who see the drift away from God's Word into whatever someone decides it means from their point of view and position. The people of the Bible from Abraham onwards had an entirely different way of seeing the universe, a more realistic, concrete and understandable way than we have today or have seen since the Greek and Roman periods. The Hebrew language (not the Hellenized, Greek adaptation) was based in natural and agricultural understanding. Words had a formed meaning the words had a root to which changes could be added but still they began with an understandable root. There is a commonality to the language which we have lost in written languages which have a Greek and Latin base.

The effect of language on Christianity has led to the growth and multiplication of denominations from Paul's time onwards. Groups such as those who followed teachers who took a view of Scripture, formed it into a sect or group, the Gnostic changed the belief into a cult with a completely foreign interpretation from what the Messiah had prayed “would be one, even as You and I are One”.
We look at this today from the perspective of religious freedom, not from God's perspective of total faith, trust and obedience to Him. We have become a tumbleweed congregation, going where the winds of popularity, trends, marketing polls, and relevance will blow us. We have severed our roots for the sake of perceived freedom.

Studying the Hebraic Roots of Scripture will lead to a deeper and deeper understanding of the Word, a restoration of the covenant by believers with their God, and a movement and revival of faith in a time when chaos, disorder and fear of men of ill will is growing. In a sense, studying the meaning of the words in which the Bible was first written is the equivalent of what an astronomer would experience if he were present at the “Big Bang” when God spoke the universe into existence. Deeper, deeper and deeper it gets.
