”For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
God's Word is not simply letters on a page. It is alive and has the power to transform lives. There is no other teaching or technique or belief system which is alive and can penetrate our hearts. When scripture is all we have, it is enough!
We had a missionary speak recently on Wednesday evening at our church. This man had been involved in missions work in Eastern Europe prior to the fall of Communism. The stories he told us of the power of God's Word and the work of the Holy Spirit in that part of the world during the dark days of Communist oppression were incredible!
He spoke specifically about Albania. Albania was one of the most closed societies in the world to the Gospel. It was literally impossible for missionaries, or even tourists, to go there for many years. This man and another missionary packed up 4000 gospels of John in water tight bags and took them to a remote area of northern Greece where a river separates Albania and Greece. From the Greek side they placed God's Word into the river and watched as it flowed down stream into Albania.
On other occasions they would place the Gospel into the waters of the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Albania so that it would be washed up on shore. Many missions organizations did the same kinds of things.
After the collapse of Communism, missionaries began to go into Albania. They were surprised to find believers already there. When one man was asked how he came to know Christ, he explained that every morning he and some of his friends would go down to the coast to see what had washed up on shore the night before. He said there were often Bibles and other things proclaiming the name of Jesus! He came to know the Lord through this.
There was no one in Albania to tell him about Christ. However, simply having access to God's Word was enough! (See Romans 10:17)
It is enough for us too!
God's Word is sufficient for any problem we have.
Remember this as you read and study the Word during your quiet time or daily devotional. When you read the Bible you hold in your hands the key to life! Never underestimate the power of God's Word.
"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile." Romans 1:16
