Intelligent design ? Absolutely A testimony from the barn.


Today's media, talk shows, book reviews and academic podiums are full of arguments, talking head commentaries and just plain talk about the resurgence of a new brand of atheism. Creationists square off against Darwinism, religious fanatics against scientists, faith against academia: what a mess. Coming from an academic background myself, I'm familiar with the mentality of “read my book, read my book”. Somehow the more knowledge you accumulate in our secular colleges and universities, the more wisdom you lose. It took being pulled (maybe thrown is a better term) out of my cushy, clean and profoundly comfy life as a library administrator and plunged into the long, dusty (or equally muddy) muscle-aching and demanding work at a ranch with 33 pampered (alright, spoiled) show horses and other four-legged critters that made me look at creation anew from the ground up.

We had a foal due and the mare was comfortably placed in the foaling stall with the foal-cam keeping us ready for the blessed event. Horses know how to deliver their young quite well, but we are always ready for any complications that required more brain capacity and two hands and maybe even the vet. As I was wolfing down my customary can of white label spaghetti (fresh from the microwave), a knock came at the cowboy trailer door, “Angie's foaling, want to come?” What, and miss this bowl of generic pasta ? The bowl was carefully placed on the floor (warm up was much later that night) and I ran to the barn. “Angie” was lying n the floor breathing deeply and rhythmically, the miracle was starting. Little by little the new horse began to appear, the front hooves came out first, followed by a beautiful head and neck and finally the deepest breath of all pushed the gleaming new horse onto the straw. “Angie” began to clean off her foal and his breathing was deep and steady. All the stall horses peeked over their doors, there was a deep calm and silence in the barn (very unusual, I noticed). Soon “Angie” began to nose the colt up onto his long and wobbly legs with his white socks. His legs seemed too long for his body and he stumbled his way up and down and up and down again. Finally he stood up and his mother nosed him into moving around the perimeter of the stall, always putting herself between him and us amazed witnesses.

Someone will no doubt say that this is all the results of evolution, millions of years of adaptation etc., etc. etc. and more etc., read my book, read my book. After all, billions of years ago two amoeba bumped into each other in the primordial soup (another generic can ?) and voila homo sapiens ! We're just an accident after all, oops!

Not really, thank you. Someone planned this, designed it from start to finish and enjoyed the process immensely.Before the fall, before the serpent conned Eve and Adam into turning their backs on the God Who made them, Sunday was a special day, not just another day to make money. After six days of creating an entire universe, a Mighty and Joyful God took the hands of His new man and new woman and walked with them in the garden, showing them the beauty, wonder and awe of His work. He enjoyed their company and wanted to see to their happiness. I think He showed them His new horse too. Intelligent design, absolutely. Read His Book !
